Curtis Jewett tosses a strap around a 40 foot beam he removed from the barn at the Major Reuben Colburn House in Pittston. A Jewett Builders crew lowered the 1849 barn on new sills after elevating it two years ago for repair. Carpenters will finish sheathing, replace clapboards and put down a new floor over the next few weeks, according to Tom Desjardin, the historian for the state Bureau of Parks and Lands. “It was nice to see it hit the ground,” Desjardin said of the barn coming to rest.

Arthur Strout lugs a board through the interior of the sheep barn that he is assembling at the Windsor Fair. The new structure will be 80 feet long and 30 feet wide for the wool bearing critters to take shelter under during agricultural events, Strout said.

Timber framer Nate Clark saws a mortise in a hemlock girt for the barn at the Major Reuben Colburn House in Pittston. Clark’s firm, Pownalborough Restoration, is reparing the 1849 structure next to the home that dates to 1765 the Department of Conservation manages.

Steamed Dandelions

Muriel Plummer, 90, searches for Dandelion roots to harvest in the garden at her farm in Weeks Mills. Since retiring from Hussey’s General Store two years ago, Plummer keeps busy picking produce and cultivating flowers. She likes to steam the roots of Dandelions and serve them with biscuits. “I have enough for myself,” she said of her days labor.
